Risk, Reward, and Islam

Islam does not forbid profit — it forbids unjust enrichment. The key Islamic principle is al-ghunm bil-ghurm — "gain comes with risk." If you want to earn profit, you must also bear the possibility of loss.

💡 This is exactly why riba is forbidden — the lender earns a guaranteed return (interest) without bearing any business risk. Islam requires that return be tied to real effort and real risk.

Types of risk in NGX investing

  • Market risk: The overall market can go down (e.g., during economic crises). Even great halal companies lose value in a crash.
  • Company-specific risk: A particular company may perform poorly due to management, competition, or sector issues.
  • Currency risk: If the naira weakens, the real value of your investment in global terms falls.
  • Liquidity risk: Some NGX stocks are thinly traded — hard to sell quickly without affecting the price.

How Islam guides us through risk

  • Diversification: Spreading investments reduces reliance on any single outcome — this is encouraged.
  • Long-term outlook: Speculation for quick profit approaches maysir. Halal investing favors patient, long-term ownership.
  • No guaranteed returns: Any investment product offering a "guaranteed return" is likely riba-based. Avoid it.
❌ Avoid: Any investment promising a fixed guaranteed annual return (e.g., "earn 20% per year guaranteed"). This is almost always riba in disguise.
