What is the NGX Lotus Islamic Index?
The NGX Lotus Islamic Index (ticker: NGXLOTUSISLM) is a Shariah-compliant stock market index published by the Nigerian Exchange Group in partnership with Lotus Capital. It tracks a basket of NGX-listed companies that have passed an independent Islamic screening process.
💡 Think of the index as a curated list of halal stocks on the NGX — pre-screened so investors know they are dealing with Shariah-compliant companies.
How is a stock market index constructed?
An index is simply a weighted average of selected stock prices designed to represent a market or segment. Examples:
- The NGX All-Share Index (ASI) tracks all listed companies on the Nigerian Exchange.
- The NGX Lotus Islamic Index tracks only Shariah-compliant companies.
- The S&P 500 (in the USA) tracks 500 large American companies.
The Lotus Islamic Index screening process
The index undergoes periodic screening (typically annual or semi-annual) by a Shariah advisory board. The process has two stages:
- Stage 1 — Business Activity Screen: Any company with significant revenue from haram activities is excluded. This includes alcohol, pork, gambling, pornography, conventional banking/insurance, and weapons.
- Stage 2 — Financial Ratio Screen: Even if the core business is halal, a company with excessive debt or interest-based income fails the screen. Key thresholds include debt-to-market-cap under 30% and interest income under 5% of total revenue.
⚠️ Index composition changes over time. A company can be added or removed at each screening cycle. Always check the latest composition report from NGX Group or Lotus Capital before investing.
Why does this index matter for you?
As a beginner halal investor, you don't need to screen every NGX stock yourself. The NGX Lotus Islamic Index gives you a pre-verified starting universe. You can invest in an ETF that tracks it, or use it as a shortlist for deeper research.
