4 Financial Realities Explained in Simple English
No complicated finance jargon. Here is what the numbers actually mean for you.
Why were there losses in 2024 and 2025?
Building the world's largest single-train refinery cost over $14 Billion. The refinery borrowed in foreign currencies (US Dollars). In 2024, when the Naira was devalued, the Naira cost of servicing those dollar loans jumped drastically on paper, causing an accounting loss even though the physical factory was fine.
Where is the โฆ2.11 Trillion IPO money going?
Dangote is not selling existing shares to take cash out. This is an Offer for Subscription. That means all โฆ2.11 Trillion of net proceeds goes directly into the companyโs treasury to expand refining capacity by another 700,000 barrels/day and build more petrochemical units.
โข โฆ686.5 Billion (32.5%): Refinery process units and major equipment.
โข โฆ841.0 Billion (39.8%): Utilities, pipelines and offsite infrastructure.
โข โฆ583.5 Billion (27.6%): Civil, electrical and mechanical construction works.
How much debt does the company have?
As of 30 June 2026, total indebtedness stood at approximately $5.67 Billion (โฆ7.82 Trillion). While this is a large nominal figure, it is fully backed by over โฆ29.07 Trillion ($21.05 Billion) in tangible assets and rapid operational cash flows.
Will I receive dividends immediately?
Dividends are paid out of future profits when declared by the Board of Directors. The company has explicitly stated that dividends may be distributed in Naira or US Dollars. However, as an expanding refinery, a significant part of earnings will initially be reinvested to grow output.
